Patient Belongings and Valuables

Patient Belongings and Valuables

Beaufort Memorial Hospital is not responsible for replacing lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings. We urge patients to leave all valuables at home or give them to a family member or friend for safekeeping. Valuables include any items that would be considered a

loss if misplaced, such as cash, credit cards, jewelry, keys, cell phones, etc.

If personal belongings cannot be sent home, please notify the nursing staff, who will contact security to secure the items in the hospital safe. A receipt will be provided for you to collect your belongings upon discharge. If you bring any items to the bedside and do not send them with security, it is your responsibility to keep track of them. BMH staff cannot accept responsibility for personal valuables maintained at the bedside.

We offer the following additional suggestions to keep your personal items secure during your hospital stay:

  • Clothing: Storage space in patient rooms is limited. We have hospital gowns and non-skid socks for you to wear during your stay. We suggest that clothing worn to the hospital be sent home with family/friends and that appropriate clothing be brought to the hospital shortly before your discharge.
  • Dentures, Hearing Aids, Eyeglasses: If requested, a staff member can provide containers labeled with the patient’s name to store these items when not in use. Please avoid placing them on a meal tray, on the bed, in a napkin, on the over-bed table, in a robe pocket or in any other concealed place where they may be lost or accidentally thrown away.
  • Wheelchairs, Walkers, Canes: Please put your name on all necessary items that are brought to the hospital.
